Goodreads Summary:
Mare Barrow's world is divided by blood--those with common, Red blood serve the Silver- blooded elite, who are gifted with superhuman abilities. Mare is a Red, scraping by as a thief in a poor, rural village, until a twist of fate throws her in front of the Silver court. Before the king, princes, and all the nobles, she discovers she has an ability of her own.

To cover up this impossibility, the king forces her to play the role of a lost Silver princess and betroths her to one of his own sons. As Mare is drawn further into the Silver world, she risks everything and uses her new position to help the Scarlet Guard--a growing Red rebellion--even as her heart tugs her in an impossible direction. One wrong move can lead to her death, but in the dangerous game she plays, the only certainty is betrayal.

I was a little nervous going into this book because of all the hype. I set fairly low expectations because I did not want to be affected by the hype and end up disappointed. I wouldn't say this book disappointed me, but I didn't LOVE it like a lot of people did.

The world and premise are intriguing. It's almost a mix of fantasy and dystopian. I really enjoyed learning about and exploring this world. I would say the world building is strong, but it was hard to grasp at times. Especially in the beginning, I felt like I was reading a textbook and it was hard to follow and understand everything at first. There is a bit of information dumping. Because of this, the start of the book didn't exactly pull me in. Although, I did get a good feeling for the world by the end of it.

Mare is a good main character, I loved reading from her perspective. I like her personality and strength. She is tough, but also endearing. However, the other characters didn't really do it for me. I don't dislike them, but there seemed to be lack of development.
There is some romance, but it confused me. It's almost like the story couldn't decide if it wanted a romance or not. Romantic feelings popped up here and there, but were not really elaborated on. There are a few potential love interests, but, honestly, I would be okay with no romance. It just does not seem right for Mare's character at the moment.

The pacing and plot felt slow for the most part. There are twists towards the end, but they didn't surprise me all that much. Also, when I put the book down, I was not really excited or dying to pick it back up again. I definitely enjoyed it while I was reading, but once I would set it down, I was not very inclined to get back into it.

This book pretty much met my expectations. It is a gritty and fun read. There's intensity and action along with a neat and imaginative world. However, I wasn't fully captivated by the characters or plot. It's a good book and I am looking forward to the sequels. The ending is a nice set up for the rest of the series. I would recommend if it sounds interesting to you!

  3. I haven't read this book yet, but it sounds like a great read!

  4. I loooved this, but I guess the main reason it wasn't as intriguing is that it has been done a million times before.. It's a dystopian so..

but I admired Victoria Aveyard's twist of adding a little bit of fantasy in there. This is what made it extremely interesting for me, even though I was spoiled for the ending :(
